How to Add Social Bookmarks to Blogger

July 7, 2009

I have gotten A LOT of questions about how I added social bookmark links to my blog posts.

how to add social bookmarks to bloggerI'm glad you noticed the changes I made to the blog and hope you are finding them useful! Today I'll show you how to add these social bookmark links to your blog. These instructions will be specific to Blogger as that is the blog platform I use.

What exactly is social bookmarking? It is similar to bookmarking a web page on your internet browser, but instead of being saved on your computer, the web page is saved on the internet through sites like Stumble Upon, Technorati, Digg, and Delicious. You can then organize your bookmarks with tags and share them with other users. In turn, you can find other people's bookmarks that might be useful to you. It is a great tool for organizing your favorite web pages and discovering new online content.

You can also take it a step further and use social bookmarking to help increase traffic to your blog. Readers can bookmark your blog post, which will then be seen by other potential readers on social bookmarking sites. The key is to make it as easy as possible for readers to bookmark the blog post and that's where this tutorial comes in.

1. Save your Blogger Template
This is the most important step, so do not skip it. You are going to be altering the HTML code in the template and it is crucial to have a backup in case something gets screwed up.
  1. go to your Blogger dashboard
  2. select Layout
  3. select the Edit HTML tab
  4. click the Expand Widget Templates box
  5. click the Download Full Template link at the top of the page
2. Find the Spot to Insert the Code
Once you have saved your template, you want to find this part of the code:

Copy and paste the line of code above, then use the ctl+F function in your web browser to find it easily.
The footer is the section of each blog post that contains your labels, number of comments, etc. We are going to put the social bookmarking links after this part of the blog post.

3. Insert the Code
Copy and paste the following code and insert it after the post footer code (shown in Step 2).

This code will add text links for each of the social bookmarking sites shown on my blog. You can add or delete links to suit your needs.

Be sure to replace "Twitter username" with your actual Twitter username.

4. Add Images (optional)
Depending on your blog layout, you may want to add image links instead of text links. The first thing to do is find images. You can make your own or do a Google search for "free social bookmark icons". If you use free images, please be sure to follow the maker's Terms of Use. Next, you'll need to upload the images to an online server. This can be your own website, Picasa, Image Shack, Photobucket, etc. Now all you need to do is edit the HTML for the social bookmarking links to include the images.

This is the original text link:

This is the edited link with the image:

Be sure to replace "image URL here" with the actual image URL.

5. Save new Template
Once you have finished editing your Blogger template, save it and view your blog to make sure everything is working properly. Hopefully everything is working as it should, but if you run into problems, you can always upload that backup version of your template you saved at the beginning.

This is just one of many ways to add social bookmarking links to your blog. I came up with this based on my own knowledge of HTML, Blogger, and from reading a lot of articles about the subject. If you run into problems implementing this on your blog or if something in these instructions isn't clear, please let me know and I'll be happy to help.
