I love having a fresh smelling home. Unfortunately, strong odors quickly permeate everything in a small space. We've had a lot of people coming to view our apartment over the last few weeks, making freshness an even more important factor. I've used Febreze and like the results, but don't like that it's made by Proctor & Gamble, who are notorious for testing their products on animals. I set out to find a natural Febreze alternative.

Vinegar works wonders at deodorizing, but it takes a few hours for the vinegar smell to disappear. Baking soda is a great carpet deodorizer, but I don't always have the time to leave it on the carpet for hours and then vacuum. I needed something that would be as quick and easy as Febreze, but without the chemicals, mass plastic packaging and animal testing.
Febreze Alternative 1
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup cheap vodka
- 20-40 drops essential oils (optional)
Febreze Alternative 2
- 1 cup water
- 2 tbsp baking soda / sodium bicarbonate
- 2 tbsp cheap vodka
- 10-20 drops essential oils (optional)
My Favorite Mix of Oils
- 15 drops Clary Sage
- 9 drops Lemon
- 6 drops Lavender
Put all the ingredients into a spray bottle, shake well and spray. So easy! You could even have different scents for different rooms or moods.
